Chapter Eighteen

Trick or Treat

She knew it was my birthday…wow…she knew…that’s why she’s here…

“I’m sure they want to check on you,” Adele said as the last of the flute and harp concerto waned. “But nobody’s going to knock until we leave the door ajar.”

“Oh. Yeah.” Sensing Adele about to move, Jamie inhaled her scent one more time. She knew and that’s why she came to see me…

Adele snuggled a quick kiss into Jamie’s neck beneath her ear, then sprang off the bed, heading for the closed bedroom door. A sneak kiss, Jamie thought—deliciously, meltingly electric, already eliciting its soft almost-moan before she could worry about what it might make her feel.

Lynn showed up first and only briefly. She was dressed for the cameras, but her face attested to her fatigue and worry. “You’re okay?” she repeated as she scrutinized Jamie, clearly needing to hear Jamie say it—yes—watch Jamie say it—yes—three separate times. Yes.

Jamie sought updates, but Lynn replied only that the situation was “evolving” and offered a small, so-it-goes smile—nothing like the famous grin that lit her eyes and made you eager to follow her anywhere. When her suit jacket pocket pinged, she sighed. “I suppose I should be grateful there actually are candidates who want me to say nice things about them right before an election. Which is what I have to go do now. Again. At least I only need to travel as far as the teleconference setup in the study.”

Jamie lasted for perhaps a minute after Lynn left.

“Pit stop?” Adele asked when Jamie started inching off the bed.

“Gonna go find ET. She’ll be able to tell us something.”

Adele groaned. “I knew it. Are you always like this?”

“Like what?”

“It’s not fair, you know.”

“Huh?”

“I’m trying to set an example here. By hanging out in bed with you. In a prone position. The way you should be. But this instinct you have—” Adele scooted smoothly, lightly off the bed where, still in T-shirt and pajama bottoms, she’d stretched on her side. “To rebel, to push and worm your way out of whatever’s restraining you. It’s sexy. Makes me want to tease it instead of calm it down.”

“Mmm.” Jamie grinned. “That could work. You could tease it now by giving me a hand.”

A knock at the door cut off Adele’s reply, and in strode Dana, who skipped the niceties and got right to the point. “Pretty clear now our intruder had help.”

“Inside help,” Adele said.

“Yep.”

“Fitzgerald,” Jamie muttered. The only one on Great Hill’s security staff who hadn’t treated her like a suspect for the first two months after she arrived.

Dana’s eyes narrowed. “How’d you know?”

“His body language yesterday, the look on his face—when he finally found the nerve to show up. I’m betting they cornered him. A hostile recruitment.”

“So he’s told the Feds.” Dana’s tone did not suggest sympathy. “But then he would, wouldn’t he?” She glanced at Adele first, then took in Jamie, whose feet had now reached the floor. “Aren’t you supposed to stay in bed today?”

“She’s stuck,” Adele said, addressing Dana but moving to Jamie’s side of the bed.
